Sinking in the ocean
This work reflects on the changing ecology of the Pacific Ocean as large quantities of nuclear waste seep into its depths. While water is calming and inspires powerful thoughts, it also has the power to flood and distort reality. To us humans, the underwater realms are like a different world. Our senses don’t work as well beneath the waves as they would if we were whales, fish or other sea creatures finely attuned to environmental changes underwater. After reading about Fukushima Daiichi’s wastewater having to be dumped into the ocean, as well as the news about the cracking Runit Dome in the Marshall Islands, I am concerned about the ocean and contaminated water. It directly affects food systems in the world, and the livelihoods of the living beings depending on a healthy Pacific.
